About our Namesake
Loraine T. Golbow
Loraine Tidwell was born on November 11, 1906, in Iredell, Texas, to John and Fannie Tidwell. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from North Texas State College and later received her Master’s in Education from the University of Houston.
In 1930, when Addicks was still known as the “Letita” depot on the Katy railroad line, Loraine came to teach 7th grade and Homemaking. While working in Addicks, she lived in a nearby house for teachers called the “Teacherie,” just four blocks from the school. She also taught in Hico and Boling before returning to Addicks.
One day, Loraine’s car broke down, and a local garage owner, Joe Golbow, came to help. They later married on December 23, 1939, and raised three sons: Stanley, Tommy, and Walter Lee.
Over the years, Addicks changed a lot, especially with the construction of the Barker Reservoirs. In 1951, Mrs. Golbow returned to Addicks Elementary to teach second and third grade. She taught there until 1958, when she joined the staff at Katy School. In 1961, she came back to Addicks and remained there until her retirement in 1971.
Mrs. Golbow’s teaching career lasted 40 years, with 26 of those years spent in Addicks. In 1970, she received the PTA Lifetime Membership Award from the Addicks-Barker PTA. One of her proudest accomplishments was teaching the children of her former students—including her own son, Walter Lee. When asked what it was like having his mom as a teacher, Walter Lee said, “Mom cut me no slack in her class.”
